SCHAKOWSKY STATEMENT ON CIA INTERROGATION TAPES | ||
Washington, D.C.- U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), a member of the House Intelligence Committee, released the following statement today in response to news that the CIA destroyed video tapes of interrogations of two members of Al Qaeda. "The revelation that the Central Intelligence Agency destroyed evidence of the harsh interrogation of two Qaeda operatives shows us how far the Bush Administration is willing to go to protect itself from scorn at home and abroad and potentially from legal action. Most Americans are repulsed by the notion that their government would torture people. Congress can't let the administration sweep this under the rug. We must have open oversight hearings to find out exactly what happened and if any laws have been broken. As a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, I support the call by Senators Durbin and Kennedy for the Attorney General to investigate the CIA's actions." |
