Schakowsky Statement on Death of American Personnel in Libya

September 12, 2012

Washington, D.C. (September 12, 2012) — Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement condemning the rocket attack in Beghazi, Libya that killed four American personnel, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens:

"I am horrified by the vicious attack against the U.S. diplomatic post in Beghazi, Libya that took the lives of Ambassador Christopher Stevens, Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith, and two other innocent Americans. My prayers go out to their families and embassy personnel.

The brutal killing of Ambassador Stevens and his colleagues is particularly tragic given their commitment to peace and the burgeoning democracy in Libya. I hope that their work for peace and security during Libya's democratic transition is not overshadowed by the evil that inspired this attack. Their courageous service deserves our gratitude and respect.

We must resist the temptation to succumb to the propaganda of hatred and continue our unwavering commitment to the values of religious tolerance and democracy. As we remember those who lost their lives in this horrible attack, I support President Obama's call for justice and efforts to increase security of our diplomatic forces abroad....
