Schakowsky Statement on Equal Pay Day

Washington, DC (April 28, 2009) —Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-IL, released the following statement in recognition of Equal Pay Day. Rep. Schakowsky is co-chair of the Congressional Women's Caucus.
"On average, a woman would have to work an entire year, then an additional four months, to make as much as a man makes in one year. Equal Pay Day shines the spotlight on this inequity, which makes it much more difficult for women than men to achieve financial security. With smaller paychecks, women are forced to stretch limited dollars even further to provide healthcare, food, and shelter for themselves and their families.
"I am proud that the first bill passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama this year was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (Check name), which will help women combat pay discrimination in the workforce. But more needs to be done. As a cosponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act, I will continue to fight against paycheck discrimination....
