Schakowsky Statement on Fifteenth Anniversary of September 11th Terrorist Attacks
CHICAGO, IL – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the fifteenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001:
“Fifteen years ago our nation suffered the worst terrorist attack in American history. Today, we honor the thousands who lost their lives and the family members and loved ones who lost their moms, dads, brothers and sisters. Our nation will never forget.
On this somber day, we all remember the heroism of the first responders who sacrificed their lives to rush into burning buildings to save lives. Many of those who rushed into danger and worked tirelessly in the days and nights after the attacks to find survivors continue to struggle with health problems. We must ensure that they get the care they need and are properly honored for what they have done.
We also take time on this solemn anniversary to commend the men and women of the United States military who are serving overseas to protect us here at home. We thank them and their families for the sacrifices they make each and every day.
The weekend after September 11, I organized an interfaith solidarity march down Devon Avenue carrying American flags to show that this attack would not divide us. We are one, and that holds true today. Our nation came together in the days following September 11. While our country faces real threats to our security, we cannot allow the voices of fear and hate to divide our country. Our values and our commitment to inclusion must remain strong.”
