Schakowsky Statement Following President Trump’s Joint Address to Congress
WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) released the following statement in response to President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress:
“Tonight, President Donald Trump spent nearly two hours lying to the American public. I found this speech insulting and disrespectful to millions, including myself. Trump is not doing anything to help working people. What ever happened to his promise to lower costs? He wants to gut health care and take food out of the mouths of poor children to give $4.5 trillion in tax cuts to his billionaire supporters.
“Trump attacked our schools, federal workers, LGBTQ+ community, service members, and immigrant communities. He made up false claims about social security beneficiaries, and even supports legislation to end Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid as we know it. The GOP is coming for your lifesaving benefits. He also said that Americans should be happy to pay increased prices for groceries, utilities, and gas so he can carry out a trade war with two of our closest allies. On top of that, Trump is parroting Putin’s talking points.
“This speech was a page right out of the Project 2025 playbook. Make no mistake about it, Trump and Republicans in Congress are dead set on dismantling democracy and the rule of law. The America that Trump described is dangerous, and we cannot stand for it. House Democrats are committed to making life better for every single American. We all must come together and join the battle. We will continue to resist and make our voices heard. Everyday Americans are counting on us.”
