Schakowsky Statement on Holocaust Museum Shooting

Washington, DC (June 10, 2009) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-IL, released the following statement after the shooting at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC that resulted in the death of Office Stephen Tyrone Johns.
"A decade ago, a hatemonger came to my district and shot men and women leaving their synagogue on the Sabbath.  When he failed to kill anyone he set his sites on a young African American man, Ricky Byrdsong, who was playing with his children and killed him in cold blood.  The evil attack at the Holocaust Museum reminds us that while we have come a long way to extinguish hate and intolerance in America; there is still work to be done....
Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns is a hero who undoubtedly saved the lives of many innocent people who were paying their respects and honoring the 6 million represented at the Holocaust Museum.  We offer our heartfelt gratitude for his heroic actions and our most sincere condolences to his family during this most difficult time....
