Schakowsky Statement on House Passage of Assault Weapons Ban

July 29, 2022

WASHINGTON - Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee, issued the following statement upon passage of H.R. 1808, the Assault Weapons Ban of 2022, which would again ban the sale, transfer, manufacture, and importation of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines – removing these weapons of war from the hands of civilians.

"I live near Highland Park, Illinois, and I have directly seen how the horrific shooting on the Fourth of July has shaken my community. Today's vote would not have been possible without the fierce and tenacious work of advocates and survivors. Thanks to their work, House Democrats have taken another bold step in the fight to end the gun violence epidemic," said Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky. "The American people have made clear that the status quo is unacceptable. No one should have to fear losing their life at school, the grocery story, place of worship, the doctor, parades, concerts or anywhere in between. Democrats will not stop fighting until our communities are safe from gun violence."

"This month we've seen democracy at work -- our lawmakers in the House have listened to the majority of Americans who are fed up after years of watching our children and families terrorized by assault weapons," said Kitty Brandtner, Founder of March Fourth. "American citizens pleading for change stand united in support of this historic passage and implore the Senate to make the right decision next. It is far past time to get these weapons of war out of the hands of civilians and off our streets."
