Schakowsky statement on House passage of the Farm Bill

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement after House Republicans managed to pass their partisan, dangerous “Farm Bill”. H.R. 2, the Agriculture and Nutrition Act or “Farm Bill” of 2018, had already failed to pass the House floor once before. Republicans persisted in their attempt to devastate America’s anti-hunger programs:

“If the Senate allows this bill to become law, 2 million Americans – that’s about 400,000 families – would lose nutrition assistance and 265,000 children would lose the school meals they depend on. How cruel do my Republican colleagues have to be to rip food out of the mouths of hungry children?

“I wish that my Republican colleagues would have to look one of these hungry kids in the eye and tell them that they won’t get the meals they’re used to receiving at school – often the only nutritious meal they’ll have all day. And when that child asks why, I wish my colleagues would tell them the truth: that Republicans gave a massive, $2 trillion tax gift to billionaires and now the rest of the country is paying for it.”
