Schakowsky statement on House passage of the GOP tax scam

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a member of the House Budget Committee and a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement in response to the House passage of H.R. 1, known commonly as the “GOP Tax Scam”:

“My Republican colleagues will live to regret the vote they just took. A vote in favor of this bill is an all-out attack on middle-class families, teachers, students, seniors, people with disabilities, and pretty much any American whose bank account isn’t seven digits or longer.”

“I was ashamed to see my Republican colleagues from Illinois vote in favor of this travesty – it is a betrayal of the people of our great state. If enacted, this bill will raise taxes on millions of middle class families and cause massive cuts to the programs that they depend on for health care and retirement security. It is a cruel piece of legislation that puts the interests of millionaires, billionaires, special interests and massive corporations above the needs of the rest of us. The fight against this monstrous bill isn’t over yet, and I know that the activist citizens who have fought with us every step of the way won’t give up now. Americans deserve a better deal.”
