Schakowsky statement on the latest study demonstrating a connection between football and CTE
Washington- Brand new research led by neuropathologist Dr. Ann McKee has found Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease caused by repeated trauma to the head, in more than 99% of the brains of NFL players studied. In March of 2016, Rep. Jan Schakowsky was the first to get the NFL’s top health and safety official to publically admit that there is a link between football and CTE. Today, Rep. Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement on Dr. McKee’s research:
“As if the evidence we had linking football and CTE wasn’t overwhelming enough already, we now have an expert neuropathologist, Dr. Ann McKee, who found CTE in 110 out of 111 of the former NFL player brains she studied. The time for denying facts and looking the other way is over. We must now actively seek out ways to protect the health and wellbeing of players from Pop Warner to the NFL and every league in between. It is also imperative to ensure that the American people are informed about the dangers associated with playing football.”
