Schakowsky Statement on Make It In America Agenda

July 11, 2012

Washington, D.C. (July 11, 2012) — Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement following a press conference with House Democrats to discuss additional bills added to Democrats' Make It In America plan:

"Today I was proud to stand with my Democratic colleagues as we released a slate of proposals that will help our businesses and our neighbors 'make it in America.'

The Make It In America agenda includes my bill, the Patriot Corporations of America Act, which would reward businesses that invest in America and American workers. It would give a 5 percent tax break and preference for government contracts to companies that are good corporate actors, producing at least 90% of their goods and services in the United States. The Patriot Corporations of America Act would create a new class of companies committed to the prosperity of American workers as well as to selling their goods in the American market. It is paid for in part by closing loopholes that give tax breaks to corporations that ship jobs overseas.

For two years, Democrats have put forward over 30 legislative proposals under the Make It in America agenda to promote domestic manufacturing, create millions of well paying, middle-class jobs, and help American workers. These proposals deserve the full attention of Congress, instead of politically-driven votes to repeal Obamacare or attacks on women's health care services that have dominated the Republican legislative agenda.

Congress should be debating the Patriot Corporations of America Act and other legislation to create jobs such as the Emergency Jobs to Restore the American Dream Act I introduced to put 2.2 million people to work for two years and President Obama's American Jobs Act which includes similar components to put people to work rebuilding schools and our communities.

Republicans should put to rest their relentless, partisan pursuits and focus on the issue most critical to millions of Americans — the availability of good-paying jobs and financial security....
