Schakowsky Statement on Passage of Continuing Resolution

September 30, 2023

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), a Chief Deputy Whip and the Ranking Member of the Innovation, Data, and Commerce Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement after voting in favor of H.R. 5860:

“Today, I voted in favor of a continuing resolution to keep our government open and funded. Republicans had us on a collision course towards a government shutdown, which would have forced our troops to work without pay, harmed small businesses, risked air travel disruptions, endangered access to food assistance for nearly seven million mothers and their children, and so much more. Not only would a shutdown have hurt working families but would also have damaged our economy and endangered our national security. Today’s vote is not only a victory for the Democrats, who worked diligently to avert a shutdown, but most importantly for the American people.

“The chaos and anxiety could have been avoided if Kevin McCarthy and his MAGA allies honored the bipartisan budget agreement they reached with President Joe Biden earlier this year. Make no mistake about it, the extremist Republicans are still plotting to slash Social Security, give tax cuts to the wealthy and big corporations, cut public school funding, and criminalize abortion care. House Democrats remain steadfast in our efforts to protect the American people and we will continue to oppose their cruel efforts.

“While this bill is not perfect, I could not let our government shut down. I would have liked to see funding for Ukraine included. There is still broad bipartisan support for continuing our assistance to Ukraine. We will never turn our backs on them. We will get Ukraine the support they need. I urge the Senate to swiftly pass this continuing resolution to keep our government open."
