Schakowsky Statement On Passage of the Water Resources Development Act
Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after the House passed the Water Resources Development Act, which authorizes aid for Flint, Michigan and funding for the next phase of the Des Plaines River Project:
“The people of Flint have endured a horrific water crisis for over two years that has damaged the lives of children and families. I saw this devastation firsthand when I visited Flint back in March with my colleagues. Just a few weeks ago, residents of Flint visited me and told how their families continue to suffer. Despite this tragedy, House Republicans have time after time turned their backs on the people of Flint. Even after the Senate acted to provide actual funding for Flint, House Republicans refused budge for months.
“Today’s vote is a step in the right direction, but more action is still needed. I will keep fighting to get the people of Flint the help they need.
“Another crucial provision in the Water Resources Development Act is the next phase of the Des Plaines River Project, which I requested along with my Democratic colleagues in the Chicago area. I am thrilled that the bill authorizes nearly $200 million for the Des Plaines River Project. I will continue to push for this project as the House and Senate work to send a final bill to the President’s desk.”
