Press Release

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee, voted to protect women’s reproductive rights with H.R. 3755, the Women’s Health Protection Act.  As the United States faces a surreal attack on Roe V. Wade and the bodily autonomy of women on a national level, this legislation will directly combat recent passage of state legislation seeking to effectively outlaw abortion. During debate on the House floor, Congresswoman Schakowsky delivered the following remarks:

“I rise in strong support of the Women’s Health Protection Act that will end the horrifying state-level attacks on abortion access. The Texas law in place would encourage vigilantism and criminalize anyone who would even help another person get an abortion. But Texas is not alone in passing these dangerous laws. Abortion is Healthcare. This is a pro-choice country and a pro-choice nation.  Women can and should make the decision to have a child or not have a child. It is about bodily autonomy, and I want to be very clear. Roe v. Wade was not the beginning of women having abortions, it was the end of women dying from abortions. I would urge my colleagues to vote in favor of this legislation and to say no to harming women.”
