Schakowsky Statement on Passing of Hecky Powell

May 22, 2020

EVANSTON, IL – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky made the following statement on the passing of Hecky Powell, a local Evanston business and community leader:

"A brightly shining light went dark today in Evanston. Hecky Powell, the larger than life owner of Hecky's BBQ, died today from COVID-19. It is hard to imagine a world without Hecky, a treasured long-time friend of mine. Hecky was involved in pretty much every aspect of life in Evanston, and never hesitated to express his strong opinions about everything from politics, to schools - he once served on the school board - or city council controversies. But above all, Hecky dedicated himself to the youth of our community. He mentored untold numbers of young people, hired them, and he gave them scholarships through his foundation named for his father. There is no one like Hecky Powell and he will be deeply missed. My sincere condolences go to his beloved wife Cheryl, his children, and the legions of people who loved him and that he loved back."
