Schakowsky Statement on Protests in Hong Kong

October 16, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC – Last night, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 4270, the PROTECT Hong Kong Act; H.R. 3289, the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, and H.Res. 543, a resolution supporting the protestors in Hong Kong. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky made the following statement in response to the passage of these bills she supported:

"China is turning its back on the commitment to the β€˜One Country, Two Systems' framework it made over 20 years ago. Today, more than 2 million residents of Hong Kong, driven mostly by the young people of that metropolis, are fighting for the democratic freedoms they were once guaranteed. This week, the U.S. House and Senate are standing with the people of Hong Kong in a bipartisan, bicameral way, to say they deserve the democracy they are striving to protect. We must stand with them as they resist an oppressive regime that seeks to eliminate the democratic freedoms that the people of Hong Kong have enjoyed. It is shameful that our President and his administration are not standing up for the forces of freedom and democracy."
