Schakowsky Statement Recognizing Casimir Pulaski Day

March 3, 2025

WASHINGTON- Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement in recognition of Casimir Pulaski Day:

“The first Monday of every March we recognize Casimir Pulaski Day in the state of Illinois. On Pulaski Day, we celebrate and reflect upon the extraordinary life of General Casimir Pulaski. Casimir Pulaski traveled from Poland to America, looking to assist General George Washington and his army. Upon his arrival in America, he wrote: ‘I came here, where freedom is being defended, to serve it, and to live or die for it.' He went on to serve as a revolutionary war officer, eventually losing his life during the struggle for American independence.”

“America today, like then, inspires the minds and hearts of many who want to call our country home. The city of Chicago is home to the largest Polish diaspora in the world. Nearly one in every 10 residents of the 9th Congressional District are of Polish descent, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to represent them. Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths.”

“Today, on Pulaski Day, we come together as Illinoisans of all backgrounds and are reminded that we have the freedoms we do because of the bravery and sacrifices of trailblazers like Casimir Pulaski. General Pulaski's legacy represents the best of our nation’s shared heritage.”
