Schakowsky Statement Remembering the Simele Massacre of 1933
CHICAGO – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the anniversary of the Simele Massacre:
Today, is a somber day in the Assyrian community as it commemorates the Simele Massacre of 1933. This horrific incident saw the forces of the Kingdom of Iraq attack dozens of Assyrian villages, killing and displacing tens of thousands of innocent civilians.
I have worked closely with the Assyrian community during my time in Congress, and I am proud to advocate on their behalf. With the rise of ISIS, we have seen a reign of terror on Assyrians and other religious and ethnic minorities in the Middle East. The actions of ISIS continue to displace millions who fear for their lives. This is why I was pleased that the Appropriations Committee in its report on the State Department and Foreign Operations appropriations bill included language directing the State Department to help protect religious and ethnic minorities in the region. This would provide a massive boost to the Assyrian community. I will continue to push for its inclusion in the final bill.
As we mark the anniversary of this tragedy, we are reminded of the dangers our world faces when religious and ethnic minorities are targeted for violence. We must all work together to ensure that this hatred is rooted out. I look forward to continuing to work with the large Assyrian community in our 9th District to ensure that their voices are heard in Washington.
