Schakowsky Statement on Supreme Court Decision Overturning EPA Rule

June 29, 2015

CHICAGO – Today, the Supreme Court issued a decision overturning the Environmental Protection Agency’s rule on mercury emissions. Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement:

“EPA’s role is to protect public health and the environment. The Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) would avert up to 11,000 premature deaths, 4,700 heart attacks and 130,000 asthma attacks each year. While the EPA did consider costs during its rulemaking process, the Supreme Court today determined that those costs weren’t considered early enough in the process and sent it back to the Agency for changes. That finding jeopardizes the health and safety of American families. I will continue to follow the MATS closely and I urge the EPA to rework its proposal as quickly as possible. It is important that the final rule includes strong public health and environmental protections.”
