Schakowsky Statement on Tax Day 2018

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on Tax Day 2018 and the effects of the GOP Tax Scam:

“Millions of Americans sat down at their kitchen tables ahead of today’s IRS deadline to go over the family’s finances, and far too many are struggling to pay the bills. The devastating effects of the GOP Tax Scam won’t help them out. The bill rushed through Congress in December by Republicans will end up raising taxes on 86 million middle-class families and give 83% of its benefits to the wealthiest 1%.

“Now, Republicans are aiming to deal yet another blow to the American middle class. They are proposing to fix the $2 trillion hole the Tax Scam made in our budget by slashing treasured programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and even Meals on Wheels.

“With far too many middle-class families across the country struggling to make ends meet this Tax Day, we need a tax code that invests in middle-class Americans and those who are seeking to join the middle class, not one that rewards companies for taking their profits overseas. We need to invest in our nation’s infrastructure, education, and health care, and create good paying jobs with benefits. We are the richest country in the world at the richest point in our history – we can achieve this. We just need to ask CEOs and the huge corporations they run to pay their fair share.”
