Schakowsky Statement on Trump Administration's decision on TPS for Honduras

May 4, 2018

Rep. Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement after it was reported that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen will end the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) of more than 50,000 Hondurans:

“Shame on Secretary Nielsen and President Trump for once again turning their backs on men, women, and children who face dangerous – often deadly – circumstances if they were to be return to their country of origin. The more than 50,000 Hondurans who will be impacted by this heartless action came to the United States fleeing unimaginable violence. Many have been here since 1999 and have become a part of the American tapestry, building families, starting businesses, and contributing immensely to our communities.

“The Department of Homeland Security under President Trump has already ripped TPS protections away from nearly 200,000 Salvadorans, 50,000 Haitians, and 9,000 Nepalis – not to mention its cruel decision to throw the lives of 1.8 million Dreamers into limbo. We cannot allow this administration to change the character of our country. We are a nation built by immigrants, for immigrants – we cannot leave them out in the cold.”
