Schakowsky Statement on Trump Undoing Progress on Clean Energy

August 21, 2018

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip and member of the Safe Climate Caucus, released the following statement in response to President Trump's announcement that he intends to roll back the Clean Power Plan:

"President Trump is not content with simply sitting on his hands and doing nothing to address the ravaging effects of climate change. Instead, he has taken it upon himself to go further and undo the progress that had already been made. At the beginning of this month, his Administration announced that they intended to roll back the emissions standards that were put in place to protect the air our children breathe. Today, the President is allowing for further pollution of this air by proposing to undo the Clean Power Plan, which set strict limits on how much carbon dioxide states could emit and encouraged the transition to clean energy.

"There is no room for debate: climate change is happening, and it threatens to upend every aspect of our lives. As the world comes together to forge solutions to this monumental crisis, President Trump brutishly rolls back the modest steps forward that had already been taken. The devastating effects of President Trump's decision will be felt by our children and our children's children for decades."
