Schakowsky Statement on Women's Equality Day 2018
Today, on the ninety-eighth anniversary of the 19th amendment, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement commemorating Women’s Equality Day:
“Today we celebrate Women’s Equality Day, honoring all those who fought to give women the right to vote in America. Women’s Equality Day is a time to appreciate those who came before us, to celebrate those who stand with us now, and to inspire those who will carry the torch of women’s equality for generations to come.
“Eighty years ago, the decades-long effort of the suffragettes culminated in the ratification of the 19th amendment which gave women the right to vote. The fight for equal rights has continued every day since then. It has been fought by courageous women and men in picket lines and board rooms, on factory floors and at the ballot box. We have won many victories and made great progress, but our work is nowhere close to being done.
“With a Supreme Court nominee threatening to undo decades of progress and do away with some of our most fundamental rights, the need to continue the movement that won us the right to vote 80 years ago could not be clearer or more pressing. Women today need to keep doing what we’ve always done: roll up our sleeves, fight like hell, and win the equality that all human beings deserve.”
