Schakowsky Statement on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day
WASHINGTON— Today, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), a Chief Deputy Whip and Ranking Member on the Innovation, Data, and Commerce Subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement in observation of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day:
“Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, serves as a time for us to reflect on how to fulfill the promise of ‘Never Again.’ Today, we remember the six million Jews who were murdered during the Holocaust. We also honor the millions of innocent victims who perished alongside them – Roma, Slavs, disabled persons, LGBTQ+ individuals, and others systematically murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators. Unchecked hate, ignorance, and nationalism resulted in one of the greatest genocides in human history.
“Anti-Semitism and hate speech are on the rise across the nation and the world. Chicago’s Commission on Human Relations reported that hate crimes are up in our own city by 71%, and most of the crimes are targeting Jews. Hate of any kind will not be tolerated in our community. The 9th Congressional District is one of the most diverse districts in the nation and is also home to one of the largest groups of Holocaust survivors. All Americans deserve to feel safe in this country, and I will not rest until the vile ideology of anti-Semitism and hatred is cast aside once and for all.
“We must aggressively work to uphold human rights in our communities and around the world. Yom HaShoah is a reminder for us all to speak up against hatred in all forms. We must never forget the atrocities of the Holocaust and all those who perished. May their memories forever be a blessing and give us strength in our pursuit of a better, more accepting world for all.
