Schakowsky supports the FAA Reauthorization Act

April 28, 2018

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a member of the Quiet Skies Caucus, released the following statement following her vote in favor of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Act:

“This vote was a step forward for residents around O’Hare Airport who are deal with airplane noise every day. The FAA bill includes an amendment that I cosponsored to improve measurement of airport noise and better address resident noise concerns. It also requires studies on the impacts of airport noise and strategies on noise mitigation.

“This bill is a win for airline workers. It increases the rest standard for flight attendants from 8 hours to 10 hours. And it restricts ‘flag of convenience’ carriers that skirt our labor standards.

“I am disappointed that the House did not consider my amendment to ban involuntary bumping – the practice of denying passengers seats even when they have a ticket and checked in on time. However, the bill did take a first step of prohibiting bumping once a passenger has boarded the plane. I will keep working to pass my BOARD Fairly Act to fully protect consumers from this unfair industry practice.

“While this is not a perfect bill, I am pleased that Republicans put aside talk of privatizing air traffic control and allowed us to reach a true bipartisan compromise to authorize the FAA for the next five years.”
