Schakowsky Votes Against Continued Efforts to Undermine the Iran Nuclear Deal
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) released the following statement after voting against the first of three bills to undermine the Iran Nuclear Deal on the eve of its one year anniversary:
“House Republicans have decided to mark the last week before their scheduled 7-week summer recess by bringing up three bills designed to unravel the Iran Nuclear Agreement. Instead of acknowledging the success of that Agreement, they want to take us back in time to when we lived in fear that Iran was on the brink of developing nuclear weapons.
“This week, we celebrate the one-year anniversary of this historic agreement and its success. Over the past twelve months, Iran has reduced its stockpile of fissile material by 98% and removed over two-thirds of its centrifuges. The core of the Arak reactor has been filled with concrete – rendering it unable to produce the material needed to develop or create nuclear weapons. The International Atomic Energy Agency continues to aggressively and intrusively inspect and monitor Iranian facilities.
“Despite that clear evidence of progress, Republicans are still trying to tear down this agreement. Let’s not forget that theirs were the same voices advocating war as the only solution to curtail Iran’s nuclear program. Instead, President Obama chose to work with a multinational coalition to achieve a diplomatic solution, and we are much safer because he did.
“I take comfort in knowing that these dangerous bills will never be enacted into law – that they are just partisan tactics. But I am deeply saddened that House Republicans chose to make attacks on the Iran Nuclear deal their priority – not combating Zika, not ending gun violence. The American public deserves better.”
