Schakowsky votes ‘no' on 3-Week Continuing Resolution

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip and member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement after voting against the Republican Continuing Resolution to keep the federal government funded for three weeks:

“Republicans control the House, Senate, and White House, and are still somehow incapable of governing. I refuse to enable their recklessness.

“Since the government’s fiscal year began almost four months ago, Republicans have kept our government running only through a patchwork of short-term funding bill after short term funding bill. Almost four months later, we have no long-term agreement on a budget and no action on our nation’s most critical priorities. You can’t make plans based on a three week budget – businesses don’t know if projects will be funded, community health centers don’t have a guarantee they will be paid, and those who need job training don’t know if they will be able to get it. This is no way to run a government. It damages our military, our economy, and our nation’s credibility.

“This is the greatest country in the world. We should be able to come together to address important issues. Instead, the government is set to run out of funding again in three weeks, and we still have no commitment from House Republicans or President Trump on a path forward.

“The Trump Shutdown may be over. But for pensioners, veterans, victims of the opioid epidemic, families needing Community Health Centers, American citizens ravaged by natural disasters, and 800,000 Dreamers, it still feels like the Republican-controlled government is closed.”
