Seniors Task Force Co-Chairs Statement on Reauthorization of the Older Americans Act

Today, Seniors Task Force Co-Chairs Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Doris Matsui (D-CA), released the following statement after the President signed the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act:

“The Older Americans Act is a vital part of our efforts to ensure that seniors are secure in their retirement and can live independently, with dignity, in their communities,” said Congresswoman Schakowsky. “I was very encouraged that both the House and Senate were able to work in a bipartisan fashion to reauthorize and improve the Older Americans Act. The 2016 reauthorization signed into law today by President Obama makes improvements in nutrition and meals programs, while providing greater ability to protect seniors from financial and other forms of abuse. Having helped deliver these meals, I have seen first-hand how vital these programs are to seniors, especially elderly women living alone who rely not just on the food, but on human contact. I am particularly pleased that the new law includes assistance to Holocaust survivors. Now that the reauthorization has passed, we must focus on making sure that we appropriate the funding needed to fully implement OAA services.”
