Statement on Regulations to Equally Cover Mental Health

November 8, 2013

Washington, DC (November 8, 2013) – Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after the Obama Administration a final rule on mental health parity:

“The final rules that were issued today for the Mental Health Parity and Equity Addiction Act are a major step forward for healthcare consumers. This Act ensures that consumers won’t face higher co-pays or premiums and visit limits are no more restrictive for mental health disorders than they are for other medical benefits. Because of Obamacare, these new consumer protections will apply in the individual and small group markets, making sure that everyone benefits from mental health parity standards.

“This is a victory for mental health advocates and providers who have fought for so long to eliminate discrimination and ensure that mental health services are available. Too many men and women are struggling with a mental illness or living with substance abuse and are not able to obtain the help they need. This rule will ensure that insurance companies can no longer treat mental health and substance abuse services differently by imposing higher cost-sharing or greater limitations. It is a major step forward in realizing the vision of the late Senator Senator Paul Wellstone and former Rep. Patrick Kennedy and so many others who believe that those who suffer from mental illnesses should receive the quality care they need without discrimination.”
