Statement on United States Postal Service’s Change to Mail Delivery Standards

October 1, 2021

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement on the new mail delivery standards:

"As the United States Postal Service (USPS) begins to implement its new service standards today, I am extremely concerned how these new standards will further delay mail delivery and hurt consumers.

"In March of this year, Postmaster General DeJoy released his ten-year plan ‘Delivering for America,' claiming it was as plan to help the Postal Service reach financial stability and improve service. Yet, ever since DeJoy was named Postmaster General he has continuously tried to dismantle the Postal Service from the inside out, and these new mail standards are no exception. These new standards show that First-Class Mail will take up to 3, 4, even 5 days to deliver depending on the distance.

"I have consistently called for the removal of Postmaster DeJoy for his attempts to destroy the Postal Service. These latest attempt must be his last. It is past time for the USPS Board of governors to act and finally remove DeJoy.

"The Postal Service has remained an essential service that many Americans rely on to deliver their life saving medications, bills, and correspondence. That is why, I will continue to work with my colleagues and the Biden Administration to remove Postmaster General DeJoy and this absurd new standard to ensure that the Postal Service remains a trusted public institution."
