Statement on Women’s History Month
Washington, DC (March 1, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on Women's History Month:
"Today marks the beginning of Women's History Month. Through the month of March, we celebrate the accomplishments and courage of women all over the world. American women have made significant progress through the years, from access to safe and legal abortions, to ending discrimination in health insurance, to women serving as leaders in Congress, businesses, the military and in their communities.
"Today is the first day of Women's History Month, but it's also the day that $85 billion in automatic spending cuts, known as the sequester, begin. Essential programs that women rely on every day, such as breast and cervical cancer screenings and child care services, will be cut and threaten the progress women have made over the years. The sequester must be addressed immediately and I'm committed to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to achieve a more balanced approach.
"We should celebrate Women's History month by addressing women's priorities, such as the Paycheck Fairness Act and ensuring that women can take paid family and medical leave. I will continue to fight and advocate for advancing the rights of women all over the world. The month of March is the time for celebration, to reflect on our past and to look forward to improving our future."
