Congresswoman Schakowsky’s Statement on GAO Report on Aid to Ukraine

Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and a member of the House Budget Committee, made the following statement after the Government Accountability Office issued their legal opinion on the actions surrounding the withholding of foreign aid to Ukraine:

“There is no sham, no hoax, no made-up reason for the impeachment of President Donald Trump. Today, we have another legal finding that underscores why this President is not fit to serve and must be removed from office. The government’s independent, non-partisan watchdog, the Government Accountability Office, has confirmed that President Trump broke the law by withholding critical security assistance to Ukraine which had been appropriated by the Congress. This is yet another example of this President’s brazen and snowballing efforts to abuse his power. With my colleagues in the House, I hope we can take swift legislative action that will protect Congress’ power of the purse and increase transparency of the Executive Branch. I urge the members of the U.S. Senate to rein in this overreach and deter future lawbreaking by taking these impeachment proceedings seriously and allowing witnesses and new evidence to be admitted. Both chambers must send a clear message that no one is above the law, not even the President.”
