Schakowsky, Dingell Applaud FTC Action To Protect Consumers from Sham Car Warranties

February 15, 2022

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-MI) applauded recent action taken by the Federal Trade Commission to protect consumers from fraudulent telemarketing calls selling sham automobile warranties. They released the following joint statement:

"For the past few years, consumers across America have been plagued with fraudulent telemarketing calls selling ‘extended automobile warranties.' These phony calls must stop. We applaud last week's action by the Federal Trade Commission to hold accountable a group of fraudsters who have swindled more than $6 million from consumers by selling these sham warranties.

"The ‘warranties' sold by American Vehicle Protection Corp. didn't cover a vehicle ‘bumper to bumper' as the telemarketers claimed, nor was the stated refund policy honored. The scammers called consumers illegally including phone numbers on the Do Not Call Registry. These actions are clear violations of the FTC's Telemarketing Sales Rule and we commend the Commission for its action to enforce egregious misconduct that violates the Rule."
