Schakowsky Statement on the latest Republican Attacks on Social Security

Press Release

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the introduction of Legislation that would severely cut Social Security benefits:

“Republicans have proposed the most disastrous changes to Social Security since President George W. Bush tried to turn this national treasure over to Wall Street in 2004.  Last night, as Congress left town for the holidays, Rep. Sam Johnson, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Social Security, offered the latest attack.  He dropped a bill that would raise the retirement age to 69, cut benefits by more than a third, and reduce the annual cost-of-living adjustment.

At the same time that House Republicans want to slash Social Security’s earned benefits, they also want to raise Medicare costs to seniors and people with disabilities and slash Medicaid funds that help pay for medical and long-term care needs.  It would be doubly devastating for Americans -- reduce Social Security benefits while more of those limited dollars go to pay for medical bills.

Just as Democrats stopped President Bush and his dangerous privatization scheme, we will stop today’s Republican assaults on Social Security and Medicare.  And we will demand that President-elect Trump keep his campaign pledge and join us to block any cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Apparently nothing upsets House Republicans like the idea of hard-working people getting to enjoy a secure and dignified retirement.  While Speaker Ryan sharpens his knives for Medicare, Chairman Johnson’s bill is an alarming sign that Republicans are greedily eying devastating cuts to Americans’ Social Security benefits as well.”
