Schakowsky Statement on New Twitter Whistleblower

January 25, 2023

WASHINGTON - Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement following the emergence of a new Twitter whistleblower:

"The Twitter whistleblower’s disclosures highlight that technology companies are routinely failing to protect the security and privacy of consumers’ data. I am particularly concerned about Twitter users’ data, as well as the potential impact of the debts Elon Musk owes to foreign powers. Musk’s leadership has been tumultuous; just this week the self-described 'free speech absolutist' caved to Indian government requests to censor a documentary about Prime Minister Modi, going as far as suppressing the account of native Chicagoan John Cusack for sharing the documentary.

"This further demonstrates the need for action from both Congress as well as regulators. The American Data Privacy and Protection Act, which passed the House Energy and Commerce Committee last Congress with overwhelming bipartisan support, required companies to ensure consumers’ data is secure and empowered the FTC to enforce the requirement. These protections are more important than ever, and I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass them into law."
