CHICAGO, IL — (December 1, 2010) Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released the following statement today after the Illinois House and Senate passed civil unions legislation.


"This is a momentous day in Illinois and I commend the state House and Senate for taking a historic vote to pass civil unions legislation. With it, Illinois removes some of the most egregious barriers currently faced by gays and lesbians in our state, including the denial of hospital visiting rights to same-sex partners. This is a necessary and very important beginning.

"Medical loss ratio... set to protect Americans' health care and pocketbooks


CHICAGO, IL — (November 22, 2010) Today Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released the following statement in response to the Department of Health and Human Services' implementation of the "medical loss ratio,... which requires insurers to spend at least 80 cents of every premium dollar on medical care. Insurers that spend less will be required to issue rebates to consumers.

WASHINGTON, DC (November 18, 2010) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released the following statement in response to Gerda Weissmann Klein becoming a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Honor. Weissmann Klein survived theHolocaust, which resulted in the extermination of 6 million Jews. In July, Congresswoman Schakowsky wrote a letter to President Obama encouraging him to honor Gerda Weissmann Klein with the award.

It is a tribute to General Casimir Pulaski, the Revolutionary War hero, on the anniversary of his death. Illinois observes the first Monday in March as Casimir Pulaski Day.
