WASHINGTON, DC (July 31, 2009) — A major step was taken today to limit annual health insurance premium increases; the first time in history legislation of this kind has been approved. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-IL, passed legislation through the House Energy & Commerce Committee that would prevent excessive annual premium increases while reducing health care costs for families and small businesses. The Schakowsky Amendment will limit annual increases in premiums for Exchange-participating plans to 150 percent of medical inflation. "Americans live sicker, die younger, and pay twice as much for health care than any other country.

Jan Schakowsky, D-IL, Chairwoman of the House Intelligence Subcommittee on Oversight & Investigations, issued the following statement to announce a full investigation into certain CIA programs and the Congressional notification process. "The House Intelligence Committee will move forward with a full investigation that will explore certain CIA programs and the core issue of how the committee is kept informed. My subcommittee will take the lead on significant portions of the investigation; we will explore instances where the Congress was not informed in a timely way and situations in which laws may have been broken.

Jan Schakowsky, D-IL, released the following statement after the shooting at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC that resulted in the death of Office Stephen Tyrone Johns. "A decade ago, a hatemonger came to my district and shot men and women leaving their synagogue on the Sabbath. When he failed to kill anyone he set his sites on a young African American man, Ricky Byrdsong, who was playing with his children and killed him in cold blood. The evil attack at the Holocaust Museum reminds us that while we have come a long way to extinguish hate and intolerance in America; there is still work to be done....

Washington, DC (May 20, 2009) — Growing noise pollution from planes at Chicago O'Hare International Airport has caused tremendous frustration for residents within ear shot of airplanes coming and going.  O'Hare maintains that aircraft noise is below the Federal Aviation Administration's mandated levels, but residents protest the FAA method does not accurately measure air traffic noise.
