SCHAKOWSKY CONDEMNS ATTEMPT TO GUT CAFE STANDARDS

Urges Energy and Commerce Committee to Raise Fuel Economy Standards, Lower Gas Price

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky, a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, today condemned Republicans' delay in raising fuel economy standards in a markup before the full Committee. The Committee passed a bill which would give the Bush Administration sole authority to raise or lower standards without the consent of Congress, and to move to a size-based fuel economy system which could lead the automobile industry to produce larger, less fuel-efficient vehicles.

Schakowsky says U.S. must limit record profits, invest in renewables and promote conservation to bring prices down

CHICAGO, IL - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky and Senator Dick Durbin were joined by small business owners at a fueling station in Chicago today for a press conference on the record gasoline prices facing consumers. When President Bush took office, gas prices in Chicago were $1.54 for a gallon of regular; today they are $2.94 and on the rise.

SCHAKOWSKY SAYS OIL AND GAS PRICES ARE UP BECAUSE OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL HAS INCREASED UNDER BUSH

GASOLINE AND OIL PRICES HAVE DOUBLED SINCE 2001; DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL HAS INCREASED 14%

WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky, a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, today linked America's dependence on foreign oil to the rise in gasoline prices across the United States at a hearing on world crude oil prices before the Committee. The price of gasoline and the price of crude oil have doubled since 2001, while oil imports are up 14 percent. Twenty percent of those imports are from the Middle East.

MURTHA TO JOIN SCHAKOWSKY FOR TOWN HALL MEETING ON IRAQ

WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Representatives Jan Schakowsky and John Murtha, former Marine and ranking member on the Subcommittee on Defense Appropriations, will host a town hall meeting on Iraq.

Representative Murtha is the sponsor of a resolution which would strategically redeploy U.S. troops from Iraq. Schakowsky is a founding member of the Out-of-Iraq Caucus.
