WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today introduced the Andean Region Contractor Accountability Act (ARCAA), legislation that would prohibit the federal government from funding private armies in the Andean region. Currently, taxpayer funds are used to pay private companies millions of dollars to fight the war on drugs in the Andean region.

CHICAGO, IL - On Earth Day 2001, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) warned that the health of thousands of Illinois residents is at risk since their drinking water contains unacceptable levels of arsenic. Schakowsky held a news conference at Foster Beach on Lake Michigan with environmentalists, concerned residents, and local elected officials.

DISTRICT RESIDENTS WITH UNCLAIMED/ UNDELIVERABLE TAX REFUNDS

CHICAGO, IL - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today released the list of 9th Congressional District residents with unclaimed/undeliverable tax refunds sitting at the IRS. The list is also posted on www.house.gov/schakowsky/. Those who discover their name on the list or suspect that the IRS owes them a refund can call 1-800-829-1040.

"On Tax Day, 2001, the IRS owes you money and you may not even know it," Schakowsky said.

CHICACO, IL -- U.S. House of Representatives Democratic Leader Dick Gephardt and U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today rallied Chicagoans against President Bush's budget proposal.

Hundreds of people from area senior, labor, and environmental organizations attended the rally to oppose the Bush Budget plan that threatens Social Security and Medicare, fails to provide seniors with prescription drug coverage, and does not meet domestic priorities. Instead, this budget plan guarantees a tax cut to the top 1% of taxpayers.
