Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip and original cosponsor of the HOT CARS Act, released the following statement marking National Heatstroke Prevention Day:
“So far in 2018, twenty-nine young lives have been lost to heatstroke inside vehicles. That’s nearly one life lost every week. We cannot allow this quiet epidemic to continue, especially as these tragedies are preventable. By marking National Heatstroke Prevention Day, I hope we can raise awareness, and encourage Americans to stay vigilant by ‘looking before they lock’ as this blisteringly hot summer goes on.
Late last week, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus’ Health Task Force, introduced a suite of bills to lower prescription drug prices. After introducing the bills, Rep. Schakowsky released the following statement:
“Americans are demanding Congress take action as soon as possible to lower prescription drug prices. The message is clear; according to a recent poll, 73% of Americans believe the costs associated with prescription drugs are unreasonable. Americans are being forced to choose between their prescription drugs and putting food on the table, and Congress must do everything in our power to act.”

On Friday, 35 members of Congress led by Representatives Jan Schakowsky, David Price, Steve Cohen, and John Yarmuth, sent a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reaffirming their steadfast commitment to providing necessary security assistance to Israel and urging the State Department to address the detention of Palestinian children. Today, the House of Representatives passed Representative Schakowsky’s H.R. 3728, the EMPOWER Act (Educating Medical Professionals and Optimizing Workforce Efficiency and Readiness Act). This bill reauthorizes health professional workforce programs and optimizes workforce training programs for geriatric care. It reauthorizes the Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Programs and reestablishes the Geriatric Academic Career Awards which are critical to building a robust geriatric care workforce.
