SCHAKOWSKY SPONSORS RESOLUTION CALLING
FOR UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE BY 2008
WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky was joined today by over 50 members of Congress in introducing a resolution urging Congress to pass legislation that provides universal health care by 2008. Nearly 46 million Americans are uninsured and millions more are so poorly insured that they cannot afford to get sick or injured. In 2006, health care spending is expected to approach $2.2 trillion in the U.S., accounting for more than 16% of GDP.

Misguided budget and tax cuts for millionaires increase record national debt, cut vital programs
WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Democratic Whip, today released the following statement on the FY2007 budget that passed the House of Representatives in a late night session. Schakowsky said that President Bush and Congressional Republicans cut programs vital to working families in order to fund tax cuts for millionaires, which are projected to add another $1.1 trillion to the national debt:

Calls on President to deploy National Guard troops to states devastated by natural disasters
CHICAGO, IL - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky today released the following statement in advance of President Bush's primetime speech on immigration. According to news reports, President Bush planned to call for thousands of National Guard troops to be temporarily deployed to the U.S. - Mexico border:

CHICAGO, IL - Today marks the deadline for Medicare beneficiaries to enroll in the Administration's Medicare prescription drug benefit without being penalized. Senator Dick Durbin, and Representatives Rahm Emanuel, Jan Schakowsky, Danny Davis, Dan Lipinski, and seniors and advocates held a press conference to discuss ways to improve the prescription drug benefit so that both seniors and taxpayers receive a fair deal.

ADDRESSES OVERCHARGES, BACKGROUND CHECKS, HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES
WASHINGTON, DC - US Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today won bipartisan support for an amendment that mandates tougher oversight and accountability for the second largest military force in Iraq, US-hired contractors. Under the new rules set forth by the Schakowsky amendment, the estimated $50 billion, 20, 000 person plus force will be subject to more oversight and accountability.
