WASHINGTON, D.C. - Monsignor John J. Egan is a man who never wavered in his mission to promote justice and to better the lives of so many people. He struggled on behalf of the poor and working men and women, gave voice to the voiceless, and cared for those pushed aside by our society.
I personally called him a friend and am proud to have worked with him for many years. He was also a friend of every man, woman or child who needed a helping hand, a voice, or simply a sympathetic ear.
BIPARTISAN LEGISLATION TO EXEMPT HOLOCAUST
RESTITUTION PAYMENTS FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAXES

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today joined Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and Jerry Weller (R-IL) in introducing the Holocaust Victims Tax Fairness Act of 2001. The bipartisan legislation would ensure that any Holocaust restitution payments received by survivors or families of victims are exempt from federal income tax.

DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON ELECTION REFORM
CHICAGO, IL -- Vice Chair Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today welcomed the Democratic Caucus Special Committee on Election Reform to Chicago. The Committee held a hearing attended by 200 voters in Kasbeer Hall at Loyola University's Chicago campus.
Schakowsky is the author of the Provisional Voting Rights Act of 2001, H.R. 1004. The legislation would guarantee that no registered voter would be turned away at the polls. The following is Schakowsky's statement:

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today commended Representative Danny K. Davis (D-IL), author of a Congressional Resolution stating that problems facing the "United States Postal Service cannot be solved by drastic reductions in service, reducing 6-day delivery, post office closings, diminishing collective bargaining rights, or increasing postal rates."
HOUSE APPROVES SLAUGHTER/WAXMAN/SCHAKOWSKY
AMENDMENT ON HOLOCAUST RESTITUTION
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Saying that time is of the essence, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today hailed the passage of an amendment to ensure that Holocaust survivors and families of victims receive a measure of justice as soon as possible. The Slaughter/Waxman/Schakowsky amendment was included in the Foreign Relations Authorizations Act.
Schakowsky is also working with Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) on legislation to exempt Holocaust reparations from federal taxes.
