Rep. Schakowsky Applauds President Obama's Budget Proposal

February 9, 2016

Today, Representative Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after the President released his budget proposal:

“Today, the President delivered a budget that invests in the future of our nation while ensuring that we keep our promises to seniors and improve the quality of life for all Americans, not just the wealthiest few. Budgets are a clear statement of priorities and a vision for the future. It is clear that the President has a bold and optimistic vision for the future of this country. Nothing exemplifies that more than the President’s investment in Vice President Biden’s cancer ‘Moonshot,’ that has the opportunity to cure this horrible and devastating disease once and for all. His budget also invests in education by working to lower the burden of student debt and expanding investments in innovation, which will create good paying jobs for hard-working families.

“The President’s budget stands in stark contrast to that of House Republicans. In the past their budgets have attacked seniors and people with disabilities by ending Medicare as we know it and block granting Medicaid to the states. They would also slash our investments in education, putting the dream of a college education out of reach to many aspiring Americans. All of these harmful cuts are done to pave the way for more tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans and highly profitable corporations. This is not how we build an economy that works for all Americans. At a time when the wealthiest few continue to gain more power and influence, we can’t continue to give them more handouts at the expense of critical investments.

“The contrast in priorities could not be clearer. At this critical moment in the history of our nation, we can’t allow the wealthiest and biggest corporations to avoid paying their fair share while failing to invest in our people and our future. We know how to create good paying jobs and build prosperity for all, not just the wealthiest few. It’s time to pass a budget that works for all Americans."
