Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip and a member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement on the passage of the GOP's FY2018 Budget Resolution:
"The Republican Budget passed today paves the way for trillions of dollars in tax cuts for millionaires, billionaires, and corporations – paid for by middle-class families, children, seniors, and people with disabilities. Under the Republican tax plan, 1.9 million Illinoisans would no longer be able to claim the state and local tax deduction. Nationwide, 47 million Americans in middle-class households making between $50,000 and $150,000 would see an increase in their taxes.
Washington, D.C.- Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chairs Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ) and Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI), along with CPC Healthcare Taskforce Chair Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), sent the attached letter to President Trump, expressing strong opposition to reports that former Eli Lilly executive Alex Azar is under consideration as a nominee for Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.
The full letter can be found here.
Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement to celebrate the Women, Peace, and Security Act being signed into law. This bipartisan bill, which Rep. Schakowsky authored along with Rep. Kristi Noem (R-SD), Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY), and Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA) in the House, promotes the participation of women in resolving conflicts around the world. It was passed by the Senate in August, then by the House on September 25th, and was recently signed into law by President Trump.
Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky led eight of her Democratic colleagues in a letter to Roger Severino, Director of the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). In the letter, members of Congress ask OCR to take a close look at complaints regarding the discriminatory practices of insurers. These complaints lay out disturbing evidence that shows how insurers may have violated anti-discrimination laws by, for example, placing vital HIV/AIDS medications in higher cost-sharing tiers in comparison to other, similar drugs.
Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, Ranking Member of the Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection Subcommittee in the Energy and Commerce Committee, sent two letters asking for answers to understand the impact of the Kobe Steel scandal on vehicle safety. The letters, which were sent to the CEOs of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and Global Automakers, come following the recent admission by Kobe Steel that its employees routinely and systematically falsified inspection data about the products that they sold. These products were then used by, among other companies, automakers – potentially jeopardizing vehicle safety and putting American lives at risk.
Washington, D.C.– Today, Seniors Task Force Chairs Reps. Doris Matsui (D-CA) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), along with Vice Chairs Reps. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA), Joyce Beatty (D-OH), Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM), Debbie Dingell (D-MI), and Charlie Crist (D-FL), released the following statement on the announcement of a 2 percent Social Security COLA increase for beneficiaries:
“Today’s announcement of a 2 percent increase in the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment is welcome news after two years of virtually no inflationary adjustment – but it is not enough to help millions of seniors make ends meet.
Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after President Trump announced his decision to decertify the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran Deal:
Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement after President Trump declared he would stop making Affordable Care Act (ACA) cost-sharing reduction payments:
