Washington, DC (April 25, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky reintroduced the Fairness in Taxation Act today:

"Our country faces an inequality crisis. While the amount of earned income — and accumulated wealth — by the top one percent of earners continues its dramatic rise, most Americans have seen little or no gain in take-home pay for decades. Today, I reintroduced my Fairness in Taxation Act to address this fundamental problem. My bill raises tax rates for those making over $1 million and taxes capital gains and dividend income at ordinary income rates for those taxpayers with income over $1 million.

Washington, DC (April 18, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after voting against the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act:

"I voted against the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act because we don't need to compromise our civil liberties to fight terrorism. Cybersecurity and privacy aren't mutually exclusive, and this bill fails to achieve a balance between protecting our networks and safeguarding our liberties.

Washington, DC (April 17, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement following the failure of the Senate to break a filibuster on a bill to require background checks for gun purchasers by a vote of 54 to 46:

"Today is not the end of the debate to protect our children and our communities from gun violence. Those who have come together to push for action — mothers and grandmothers, doctors and nurses, law enforcement officials, mayors and most gun owners — will continue their efforts and they will be successful. I am proud to stand with them.

April 11, 2013

Washington, DC (April 11, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky voiced her opposition to chained CPI as part of any budget deal today at the Congressional Progressive Caucus press conference:

"The chained CPI was a Boehner/McConnell demand in the negotiations — it was a bad idea then and it is a bad idea now. We should not be negotiating with those who want to take Social Security benefits hostage — seniors are not a bargaining chip. It's time that the Republicans agree to raise revenues that put people back to work in good-paying jobs without demanding cuts to Medicare and Social Security in exchange."

April 10, 2013

Washington, DC (April 10, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on voting against the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act:

"Our country is facing serious cyber threats and all Americans will benefit from strong cybersecurity protections. However the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) must balance cybersecurity concerns with measures that protect the privacy and civil liberties that Americans deserve. I voted against CISPA because I believe that balance hasn't been achieved in the current bill.
