"Today House Republicans decided to take up a bill that would temporarily address the debt limit, merely shifting the deadline until mid-May. Instead of addressing the crisis immediately, this temporary measure proposes holding the country hostage four months down the road instead of today. Even Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell recently said, 'It's time to stop governing by crisis and stop-gap measure.'

Washington, DC (January 18, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement in advance of the third anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United v. FEC, the anniversary falls on January 21st:

"Three years ago, the Supreme Court delivered the devastating Citizens United decision which allowed corporate and special interests to flood campaigns with unlimited amounts of money. That decision allowed wealthy people and special interests to have a disproportionate influence in our elections.

Washington, DC (January 15, 2013) — Today Rep. Jan Schakowsky, along with Rep. Henry Waxman and 43 House Members, introduced H.R. 261 the Public Option Deficit Reduction Act. This bill would offer the choice of a publicly-run health insurance plan, an option that would save more than $100 billion over 10 years.

Washington, DC (January 15, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) has reintroduced H.Res. 29, a resolution urging the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to implement the Next Generation Air Transportation System, efforts to enhance the safety of air travel and help decrease noise levels.

"The 9th Congressional District is fortunate to have a world class airport right at our doorstep, but residents deserve protection against significant noise pollution," said Rep. Schakowsky. "I am committed to protecting the communities surrounding O'Hare Airport from adverse impacts of air traffic, and I am proud to reintroduce this resolution."

Washington, D.C. (January 10, 2013) — Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement regarding the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's new rule to protect borrowers from abusive mortgage practices:

"Today, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) issued a new rule to protect consumers from irresponsible mortgage lending. The Ability-to-Repay rule, which was required under the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, goes a long way to protect homeowners from the toxic loans that crippled our economy and have so far resulted in over four million foreclosures.

"Today I will be sending a letter, along with 13 other House members, urging AIG not to join a lawsuit seeking damages from the U.S. government, which comes after the American taxpayers saved the company with an unprecedented $182 billion bailout.
