The importance of federal investment in research cannot be overemphasized. Our investment in research, including through the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Science Foundation, saves lives, improves health, and increases our understanding of the world that we live in. "Yesterday, BP agreed to plead guilty to 12 felony charges in connection with the Deepwater Horizon tragedy. While nothing can adequately fill the void left by the men who lost their lives, I hope this settlement at least brings their families a sense of justice....

For far too long, domestic violence victims have been ignored, afraid to speak up, and scared of being stigmatized. Battered immigrant women have been particularly vulnerable to domestic violence due to their temporary immigration status or lack of status. These women often suffer in silence because they fear threats of deportation, fear being separated from their children, and are afraid to come out of the shadows.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 18, 2012) — Today, Rep. Schakowsky (D-Ill.) released the following statement after the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional.
"I applaud the decision made by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals today, which ruled that DOMA is unconstitutional. The court confirmed what I and many others have long argued: all Americans deserve equal treatment under the law, and DOMA prevents that from happening. I have always been a supporter of marriage equality, and I am pleased that the court held that same-sex couples deserve constitutional protection.
