Bobby Rush (D-IL) sent a letter to Lisa Jackson, Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), urging the adoption of a strong soot pollution standard to protect public health and the environment.
Washington, D.C. (September 7, 2012) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement today in recognition of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, which was amended for the first time since 1987:
"Today, I celebrate the amended Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement between the United States and Canada, which addresses critical environmental health issues in the Great Lakes region. Washington, D.C. (August 29, 2012) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement in response to recently reported statements by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad:
"I strongly condemn recent statements by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad denying Israel's right to exist. The Iranian President's efforts to escalate tensions in the Middle East with hateful rhetoric are wholly unacceptable and dangerous.
CHICAGO, IL — Today, U.S. Representatives Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), Mike Quigley (IL-05) and Senator Dick Durbin (IL) held a congressional field forum to explore the impact of the growing student loan debt on families and the economy.
The forum was hosted in the Chicago City Council chambers, where the Illinois lawmakers heard testimony from a diverse panel of higher education experts, consumer protection advocates, and students affected by escalating debt. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan also provided perspective on for-profit colleges and the debt issues some of those schools have created for students.

"Today we celebrate one our nation's greatest success stories. Since President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Social Security into law 77 years ago, Social Security has never missed a payment nor added a penny to the nation's debt through 13 economic recessions. Over 55 million Americans count on Social Security for vital financial protection. In one out of every four households, someone is receiving Social Security benefits — a retiree, a disabled worker, a child or a widowed spouse.

"I am deeply saddened by the tragic, senseless shooting at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. My district has a large, active and highly respected Sikh community. My heart goes out to the families and friends of the six people killed and others wounded in this horrific crime.

"Yesterday House Republicans extended the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy while raising taxes on military families and the middle class. Today they doubled down on that vision as they laid out their plan for what comprehensive tax reform should look like. It was more of the same: giving additional tax breaks for the richest 2%, increasing taxes on the middle class, and enacting policies that would encourage rich corporations to ship jobs and profits overseas.
