WASHINGTON, DC (November 3, 2011) —Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) joined 132 other members of the House of Representatives to file an Amicus Brief in strong opposition to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA.)
Filed in the consolidated case of Massachusetts v. Dept. of Health and Gill v. Office of Personnel Management, the brief states that Section 3 of DOMA undermines several legitimate interests of Congress and fails to hold up under constitutional scrutiny.

WASHINGTON D.C. (October 31, 2011) — Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) released the following statement in response to an executive order signed by the President directing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to broaden reporting of shortages of certain prescription drugs and expedite regulatory reviews that can help prevent shortage. A study from the American Hospital Association earlier this year found that more than 80 percent of surveyed hospitals delayed needed treatments and restricted access to drugs to manage a depleting supply of drugs.

For a week Rep. Schakowsky will live on $31.50 worth of food, the average weekly benefit for a food stamp recipient.

Protecting Programs Critical to Seniors' Health and Financial Security
WASHINGTON, D.C. — House Democratic Caucus Seniors Task Force Co-Chairs Reps. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Doris Matsui (D-CA) sent a letter to members of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction yesterday to reject proposals that would reduce benefits to programs for older Americans and cut Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security in a way that worsens financial and health risks of senior citizens at a time of economic hardship.
