Couples and legal experts testify on economic and legal impacts of Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)

WASHINGTON D.C. (October 5, 2011) — Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky offered an amendment to H.R. 2681, the "Cement Sector Regulatory Relief Act.... H.R. 2681 would indefinitely delay the EPA's ability to reduce mercury emissions from cement kilns. Rep. Schakowsky's amendment would include in the bill's findings the scientific fact that mercury emitted from cement kilns is a potent neurotoxin that can damage the development of an infant's brain. Rep. Schakowsky issued this statement after a failed vote on the amendment:

WASHINGTON D.C. (October 5, 2011) —Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.)released the following statement in support of a proposal by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Democrats for a new surtax on millionaires to pay for President Obama's jobs bill.

"I am optimistic about the proposal released today from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Democrats calling for the nation's most fortunate to pay their fair share. This proposal is a logical and fair mechanism to have "job creators... actually help to create jobs in this economy.

Cliff Stearns (R-FL), Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce's Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, that called for an extensive, burdensome investigation of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and 83 of its affiliates despite regular state and federal audits that have shown no evidence of misuse of funds.
